Claire Kolling
English, 1-2

I grew up in the small peninsula town called San Carlos. I went to multiple high schools in San Mateo County, and I received my Bachelor's degree in English from UCLA, and my Master's degree in Education and Teaching Credential from UCSC.

I played soccer for 14 years, and have experience in such sports as baseball, softball, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, cheerleading, badminton, basketball, and ice skating. My hobbies and interests involve singing (especially in the car), creative writing, martial arts, watching movies and adding them to my 300+ DVD collection, and many more!

I'm becoming a "podster" because I love collaborating with colleagues outside of my discipline, as I am a huge fan of building a close-knit positive community. I also appreciate the idea of applying school projects to real world situations, and it is crucial for students to gain that type of experience before they graduate.

Biology

I went to Fresno State and got a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. I wanted to go into teaching to share my love and interest in science and hopefully get students to realize it was not just a difficult subject but it was actually really fascinating. I like PBL because it allows my students to learn about a given topic by exploring more of what they are interested in and it gives them a chance to be more hands on with the learning process.

I wanted to be a part of the pods because it allows me to collaborate with a teacher of a different subject area and allows us to incorporate each others subject into a project. I think it will expand our students understanding of a given subject, but also allow them to see a bridge between multiple subjects. My favorite thing is when students ask why we are writing in science when it isn’t english, or why are we doing math because this isn’t math. I think the pods will be a way for them to see how their classes are actually related in many ways.
