NextFlex Partnership and Dr. Biden Visit

Lincoln is excited to announce an emerging partnership with local technology consortium, Next Flex. Next Flex will be pairing up with individual classes and challenging these classes to solve current societal problems with the use of a specific, wearable technology; providing mentors in the industry to assist students in their project development; and field trips to technology and manufacturing sites, and local community colleges.

In mid-September, Next Flex invited two PBL students, our two PBL Coordinators, and Principal Hewitson to their headquarters to meet a very special guest, Dr. Jill Biden. Dr. Biden, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff were all present in support of a community college initiative to make community college free for responsible students.

We look forward to this ongoing and growing relationship between this forward-thinking company, whose CEO Malcom Thompson is on the Lincoln Foundation, and our efforts to provide the highest quality instruction through the practice of Project-Based Learning.

Education 21 is here!

PBL Coordinators Kelli Berryhill and Alison Zuniga are excited to announce that with the arrival of the 2016/2017 school year comes the arrival of our first set of PBL Pods! Education 21 is the pilot program that is designed to increase student achievement, connectedness to school, and  overall quality of education. The 3 pods exist at the 9th grade level with the hopes that this movement will expand in the coming years, to reach 10th, 11th and 12th grade as well. Find out more about the Pods by going to the Meet the Pods! tab at the top of this page :)

Documentaries Attempt to Solve Real-World Problems
DQ: What issue in our society needs immediate intervention?

Posted March 14, 2016

Students in Margarita Harden’s NS Spanish classes were given voice and choice when they picked a current topic of interest to research and attempt to solve. Students are working together to address global issues that warrant immediate attention, such as health problems stemming from head injuries in athletics, and provide potential solutions. The final product will be a student-made documentary showcasing their issue and solutions, which will be shown to family and peers, as well as being on display at the Spring PBL Exhibit!

Looking Deeper: Fingerprints and Sense of Self
DQ: How is my name as unique as my fingerprint?

Posted March 14, 2016

Victoria Barragan’s at it again! Students in Barragan’s Spanish classes are taking their literature reading in to their own hands—literally! While reading a chapter titled “Mi Nombre” in The House on Mango Street, students took time to reflect on their own lives and how they may identify with one of the characters from the book. After deep reflection and inquiry students produced fingerprints that detail their feelings about their own names. Que emocionado!
